Geothermal offers an optimised solution to address how we heat our homes and buildings whilst supporting a flexible, low-cost and resilient energy system. Cities are an ideal scale for exploring how to unlock the potential of geothermal energy. Collaborating with stakeholders across industry, local authorities, and national policymakers, we are exploring how geothermal heat can help cities reach their net-zero targets.

Food for Our Own Good

The "Food for Our Own Good" project focuses on creating sustainable, climate-resilient, and equitable food systems. The initiative emphasises improving food accessibility, environmental sustainability, and supporting local, community-led food systems by using geothermal energy. It incorporates diverse stakeholder engagement and participatory action research to identify barriers and potential solutions for creating a fair and resilient food system in Leeds.

‘Stories from the Subsurface'

This research takes an innovative approach to exploring how subsurface research stories can be communicated most effectively. The project team will learn how to tell compelling, impactful, and research-informed stories about the subsurface. The proposed subsurface stories will educate audiences about the energy transition, highlight Geosolutions Leeds' research and teaching programmes, and inspire the next generation of scientists interested in this field.

A Sustainable Circular Economy for Offshore Wind

This EPSRC knowledge transfer project is a collaboration between the University of Leeds, the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and the Department for International Trade. The project aims to integrate the circular economy into the design, operation, and end-of-use management of offshore wind infrastructure. A series of outputs will be delivered, including industry and government events, policy and practice briefings, and a framework for the circular economy in offshore wind, as well as a baseline of current “circular” practices. It also supports knowledge exchange across low-carbon energy, oil & gas, and offshore wind sectors. It prepares the ground for a 5-year joint industry partnership on circular economy and wind systems.  Lead researcher: Dr Anne Velenturf.

Beneath our post-industrial towns and cities lies a vast network of disused mines, a legacy of the drive to extract coal and power Britain's Industrial Revolution. Now, researchers at the University of Leeds are helping local authorities utilise this neglected resource to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
