Geoscience plays a critical role in the energy transition and achieving the UK's net-zero goals. From underground energy and carbon capture storage to supplying the minerals needed for clean technologies, the subsurface is essential to delivering reliable and scalable energy solutions. Even renewable energy developments such as wind power depend on geoscience to understand ground conditions, reduce risk, and optimise turbine foundation design.

However, geoscientists don’t act in isolation. Transforming geological and geophysical solutions into cost-effective, sustainable and fit-for-purpose energy systems requires collaboration, regulation, and public support. That’s why our research and teaching bring together geologists, engineers, social scientists, and creative practitioners to create a whole-systems approach and address the full complexity of the energy transition.
