Offshore Wind

Wind power generation is the fastest-growing energy source worldwide today, with increasing focus on offshore wind farms. It provides a reliable and scalable source of clean energy while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering emissions of other air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.

Offshore wind has a greater generation capacity than onshore wind. Located away from populated areas, these farms minimise visual and noise disruptions to communities.

However, all energy production carries certain risks, with both commercial and environmental implications. At Leeds, our research focuses on detailed analysis, modelling, and monitoring to help mitigate risks across all stages of offshore wind farm development. We are working across disciplines to identify and better understand the potential long-term environmental impacts of this infrastructure.

Our expertise in monitoring and modelling sediment mobility can help extend the lifespan of wind farm arrays, reduce operations and maintenance costs, and improve energy efficiency, all of which are crucial for our Joint Industry Programme partners.

Geoscience and Offshore Wind JIP

The project seeks to blend geological and geotechnical approaches to develop 3D ground models that permit cost effective and safe turbine foundations and cable route design.

Supporting the offshore wind industry with geoscience

Geoscientists from the University of Leeds are using expertise in seismic data interpretation and stratigraphy to reduce costs and to improve the lifespan of turbines for the offshore wind industry.
