In this policy brief, we propose three shifts to unlock shallow geothermal energy in the UK.

Using the underground to fight climate change

In this policy brief, we introduce a suite of technologies which use underground assets to store heat and energy, or provide a low carbon means of energy generation. These present regional authorities with an opportunity for low carbon economic regeneration which is sympathetic to local industrial heritage.

Shared ground heat exchange for the decarbonisation of heat

We outline the benefits and challenges of shared ground heat exchange, and actions needed by policy, housing, and innovation stakeholders to support further deployment.

Using geothermal mine water energy for food production in Leeds

Using geothermal energy from unused coal mines for food production in vertical farms or glasshouses may increase food resilience in a low carbon way. An action plan to establish a pilot in Leeds was developed with stakeholders.
