Storage

The rocks beneath our feet provide opportunities to store both energy and waste products from industrial processes, including energy generation. We can use porous, high-permeability sedimentary rocks, fractured mudstones and crystalline rocks, dissolved cavities, and abandoned mines to store carbon dioxide, energy, heat, and hydrogen. Ductile salt and clay deposits, as well as massive crystalline rocks, could be suitable for nuclear waste disposalThese storage sites are essential to achieving the UK's net-zero goals, as they reduce emissions in sectors where alternatives are limited or too costly.

Our expertise and track record across various rock types and geological structures enable us to identify the best storage sites and ensure their safe and cost-effective use.

We are studying the effects of cyclic loading on different rock types to quantify the long term consequences of these energy storage schemes.  

Nuclear

The combined expertise of geochemical and geomechanical researchers at Leeds is helping to identify suitable sites for GDFs, and helping to understand and monitor possible thermal and chemical changes over the longer term.
