The rocks beneath our feet provide opportunities to store both energy and waste products from industrial processes, including energy generation. We can use porous, high-permeability sedimentary rocks, fractured mudstones and crystalline rocks, dissolved cavities, and abandoned mines to store carbon dioxide, energy, heat, and hydrogen. Ductile salt and clay deposits, as well as massive crystalline rocks, could be suitable for nuclear waste disposal. These storage sites are essential to achieving the UK's net-zero goals, as they reduce emissions in sectors where alternatives are limited or too costly.
