Methodology

Building on our interdisciplinary expertise in geosciences, engineering and social sciences, we pioneered an innovative above and below ground analysis to explore how geothermal heat can help support development of low carbon heat networks.  

This involved bringing together three pillars: 

• Development of a new 3D geological model of the city 
• Surface-level geospatial energy needs analysis 
• Social science research with cross-sector stakeholder input  

We first trialled this approach in Leeds, working with local and national partners between October 2023 and July 2024.
