Master's By Research

What is a Master's by Research degree?

A Master's by Research is a full-time, year-long (or part-time, two-year) program where you conduct an original, independent research project under academic supervision. At the end of the program, you will submit a research thesis and undergo an oral examination (viva voce).

What can you expect?

This degree is a great way to gain advanced, specialised training in research methods, ethics, and professional practice. This makes it the perfect springboard for a PhD programme.

You will have access to specialist facilities and software, including our Living Lab for Net Zero, and hands-on experience. This will equip you with the skills to succeed in a career in the industry.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold, or should expect to achieve, an upper second-class Bachelor's degree or higher. Funding would not usually be awarded to an applicant who obtains, or is predicted to obtain, less than an upper-second-class Bachelor's degree. However, significant additional factors, such as extensive relevant work experience, will be taken into consideration. We expect applicants to possess the research skills needed at the outset of the degree.

I decided to choose a Master’s by Research as it enabled me to explore my chosen subject extensively and gave me the freedom to focus on areas of interest, whilst managing my own study time. I had access to specialised laboratory equipment and University facilities, alongside exceptional support from my supervisors throughout the degree. I am very grateful for the opportunities this Masters has opened up for me and as I was able to develop essential research skills and focus on chosen topics and it has meant my career path has continued in similar areas of interest. I thoroughly enjoyed my time undertaking the Research Master's and believe it has equipped me with invaluable tools heading forward.
