DAS at the Eskdalemuir Seismic Array
SEE's A1 interrogator was deployed throughout February 2023, as part of the IRIS DAS earthquake seismology experiment to investigate the applicability of existing fibre-optic networks to monitor earthquakes. With funding from AWE Blacknest, we connected our interrogator into the fibre-optic network at the Guralp Eskdalemuir (EKA) seismic array.
The EKA array features ~38 km of fibre-optic cable; we record detectable signals our to a length of ~28 km. With 20 broadband seismometers actively recording, the installation is an ideal place to compare the potential of fibre-optic earthquake monitoring.
