Geosolutions Leeds Funding

Geosolutions Leeds Research Project Calls

Our internal call for research projects is now open, and includes funding for four fully funded PDRA positions, each lasting up to two years, and associated research project costs and staff time.

Building on our existing approach, the research projects should aim to deliver a blend of geoscience, engineering and social science to deliver an integrated approach to energy research related to the subsurface. Our current projects have achieved this through two complementary PDRAs: one focusing on geoscience/engineering and the other on social science, and we welcome proposals for projects with a maximum of 2 PDRAs, of up to 2 years duration each to maximise impact.

Please read the call guidance which is available here for full details. Please note updated call guidance 13/11/2024 - funding for staff time has been increased.

A list of the proposal questions is available here to allow drafting of your proposal. All proposals must be submitted via the application form link below.

Research Project Call FAQs

We have added some more information about general queries we have received on the call. Please see below for details.

Where should I add information on partners/partnerships relevant to the project in the application form?

Depending on the nature of the partnership and how it is relevant to your application, this can be added in the “Teams and Collaborations” question, or under “Outputs and Impact” if you expect the work to have impact with partners or enable new outputs to be developed with your partners.

Will preference be given to proposals that include two joint projects with a PDRA each, or is it acceptable to apply for a single PDRA in a standalone project?

Current projects funded by Geosolutions include 2 PDRAs working in an integrated project combining social science, engineering and geoscience. This project works as a team and meets regularly and includes an interdisciplinary team of supervisory staff. This has generated a lot of benefits and opportunities beyond what we would have expected from two standalone projects. We are keen to replicate this successful model where possible. However, we also wish to support new research ideas across the Geosolutions remit, and so we welcome project proposals for single PDRAs that clearly demonstrate excellence and the potential for securing further external funding. We fully understand that some projects work best as standalone projects, and therefore welcome proposals on this basis.

How much funding is available to cover project costs? (consumables, conference travel, field work, lab costs, etc.)

We have a maximum budget of £20k for project costs for each PDRA, however we expect proposals to cost expenses in line with the needs of the work. We reserve the right to amend the value awarded, and expect projects to demonstrate clear value for money.
