The geothermal campus project, run by Geosolutions Leeds, was shown on a field trip and at a workshop at the British Sedimentological Research Group's 63rd Annual General Meeting in December.

Geosolutions Leeds members Dr Adam McArthur, Professor David Hodgson, and Professor Jeff Peakall were heavily involved in organising the BSRG meeting in Leeds.

As part of the event, Dr Arka Dyuti Sarkar and Joe Kelly from Geosolutions Leeds geothermal group ran an integrated core and subsurface data workshop on the geothermal campus project. They also led a field trip to explore rock formations of the Carboniferous fluvio-deltaic Elland Flags in local quarries around Leeds.

The workshop highlighted how Geosolutions Leeds worked with the Yorkshire Geological Society and quarry site owners to build strong relationships that support research and external engagement.

The event brought together an international group of researchers and industry experts who were interested in the sedimentary structures found in the quarries. These structures were studied to understand the campus aquifer before drilling began.

Participants praised the University of Leeds for collecting the full core, emphasising its value for teaching and research. They noted that preserving only isolated sections of the core would limit its usefulness for geoscience research, as viewing the core in its complete sequence is crucial for understanding the bigger picture.

The meeting was an excellent opportunity for Geosolutions Leeds geothermal group to network and explore future collaborations. It also allowed them to exchange ideas for research and workshops aimed at training postgraduate researchers at the University of Leeds.
