Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale.  Nanotechnology plays an important role in many industries and across the healthcare sector but application in the oil and gas sector has been slow.  Nanotechnology has the potential to transform the technology landscape of oil and gas industry, by solving practical problems encountered in oilfield development, especially in improving recovery efficiency of the oilfield.  The main challenges associated with the use of nanoparticles are their stability in a liquid medium and transportability in reservoir rocks.

Nanotechnology underpins our research in scale formation, enhanced oil recovery and particle science. Our research benefits from both industry sponsorship and collaboration and government funding.

Current research includes:

  • Development of green chemicals for scale inhibition
  • Investigation of the use of nano-structured polymer surfaces to reduce mineral scale deposition
  • Experimental and modelling approach to engineer nanoparticles as tracers, within enhanced drilling fluids and to study their transport, collection and analysis
  • In-situ produced nanoparticles for enhanced oil recovery (iNanoEOR) (EU funded)
